HAPPY NEW MONTH DARLINGS
Let’s talk baby showers today, that wonderful moment we get to celebrate the expected birth of a child by a close friend, relative or colleague. A few days ago I was talking to a friend and she was ranting about how an old friend was bombarding her with calls and texts about her upcoming baby shower. As if that wasn’t enough, the lady was demanding that my friend shows up with some very expensive gifts from a list of items she had created. This made me realize just how much people are taking advantage of such events to extort their friends and relatives hence my decision to write a thing or two on BABY SHOWER 101.
WHO SHOULD HOST THE BABY SHOWER?
A baby shower is usually organized a close friend or group of close friends and all plans are kept a big secret from the mother to be. The whole party is basically centered on gift-giving so a family member or the mother-to-be hosting and organizing the baby shower may be misread as them asking for gifts.
WHEN IS THE BABY SHOWER HELD?
Traditionally baby showers happen a few weeks before the baby is born. However some people choose to host baby shower shortly after baby is born so it doubles up as a birth announcement too. The organizer should consult with the mother-to-be before setting a date for the shower to avoid conflict of schedules.
WHO SHOULD BE INVITED?
Family and close friends of the parents-to-be should be invited. The host should consult with a close family member and friend when compiling the guests list to avoid leaving out an important person when sending out invitations. Nowadays, men are allowed to attend baby showers so feel free to invite the father-to-be and his close friends too.
WHEN SHOULD INVITATIONS BE SENT?
Atleast 4-6 weeks before the set date to give the guests ample time to buy the perfect gifts and put the big day in their schedule/calendar.
WHO SHOULD PAY FOR THE BABY SHOWER?
Normally the friend or group of friends organizing and hosting the baby shower will raise funds to take care of the food, drinks and décor/set-up costs. They might even opt to contribute and buy gifts as a group.
The group of friends will come up with a list of items that she needs then decide what they can buy collectively. PS; NO ONE SHOULD DICTATE WHAT AND HOW MUCH THE GUEST SHOULD GIFT THE MOTHER TO BE. STICK TO YOUR BUDGET AND BUY WHAT THE BABY AND NEW MOTHER REALLY NEED. Typical gifts include diapers, baby clothes, baby blankets, toys, feeding bottles and if the guests budget allow they can bring items such as baby walkers, prams/strollers, car seats, carriers, playpens and play mats. Personalized gifts and spa vouchers for a pre-natal massage for the mother to be are always a great idea too. A little pampering session is all she needs to prepare her for the delivery and sleepless nights ahead.
Most baby shower organisers will come up with a theme or dress code for the day, try as much as possible to adhere to the dress code. Of utmost importance is prompt time keeping, better get to the venue earlier instead of showing up late. As a guest respect the host’s ideas, choice of venue and theme. Avoid making negative remarks and comments of the mother-to-be especially concerning her weight or pregnancy.
Below is a fun collage I came up with for cute gift ideas incase you are invited to a baby shower
This is the most common gift item at any baby shower and what every new mother needs before the new bundle of joy arrives. My little tip though, buy size 6-12 months especially if you are buying a lot as I realized most newborn sizes are too small and the baby outgrows them really fast. The 6-12 months size will be worn for longer period of time.
2. BABY HATS, MITTENS AND PRE-WALKER SHOES.
These fall in the same category as clothes but I got too excited with the numerous options of cute little shoes and the faux fur hat and mittens set that I decided to create a whole collage *insert cheeky giggles
3.BABY CARRIER, DIAPER BAG AND SWADDLING BLANKETS
Along with the diapers and feeding bottles, a new mother will definitely need a good diaper bag that is big enough to carry all the baby stuff she needs and a few of her own too. It should be cute and fashionable too now that its going to replace all her fancy and cute handbags for a while. A good, strong and durable baby carrier is a good investment for a new mother. Makes for a perfect gift along with the swaddling blankets.
4. BABY PRAM, CAR SEAT AND BLANKETS
Blankets are definitely ne of the essential items the baby will need. I particularly love double sided blankets. Its like having two different blankets with the different prints and patterns. A cozy and warm blanket is essential too for the chilly nights. The pram and car seat fall in the category of guests who are willing to spend a bit more on gifts for the shower. However, its important to find out before hand if the mother to be already has these items then you can spend that money on something else she and the baby really need. 5. PLAYPEN, PLAY MAT AND BABY ROCKER/BOUNCER
These items will come in handy a few months after the baby is born but it doesn’t hurt to get them early so if you are doubtful about buying them for a baby shower, worry not. They will come in very handy as the baby achieves different milestones like learning how to walk. Playtime will be fun too with the play mat and the playpen
